Neem, King of Natural Remedies
Neem is a tropical evergreen tree native of India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan and can thrive semi-arid conditions as well. In fact the tree can thrive well under mild drought conditions. Latin name of the popular neem species is Azadirachta indica but it is more familiar as nim, Indian lilac, nimmi, limbo and limda in the countries it’s grown. It belongs to the family Meliaceae. This Indian tree is now being adopted and cultivated by several Asian countries and also tropical regions of the western hemisphere.
The tree is regarded as part of the genetic bio-diversity in India. Neem is used as chief ingredient in several home remedies and has numerous envious medicinal properties. The anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, anti-pyretic, hypoglycemic, anti-fungal, nematicidal, spermicidal, anti-malarial, anti-bacterial and diuretic properties make it a pharmacy in the backyard or farm. Every part of the tree including flowers, leaves, seeds (oil from seeds) bark (gums and tannins) is used in the preparation of several ayurvedic remedies. Whilst bark is chewed for its anti-pyretic properties, flowers are consumed to check intestinal disorders. Notwithstanding the juice from leaves treats several skin conditions and also believed to check obesity. The oil from neem seeds is believed to treat arthritis, skin diseases and even muscular sprains.
The anti-bacterial properties of neem help in treating gum and tooth problems including caries. Neem, king of herbal remedies also possesses blood purifying properties and there are now neem products floating in the cyber markets as well such as neem shampoo and conditioner, neem oil, neem soap, neem-based lotion and gel, neem toothpaste, neem supplements, etc.
Neem shampoo is touted as dandruff killer and if more people start enticing this neem shampoo and conditioners, the chemical-based so-called anti-dandruff shampoos will lose their place in market totally. Neem shampoo indeed does a great deal of good to our pets and keeps their skin dander and ticks free.
The antibacterial properties of it can justify neem as king of herbal remedies. Its extracts are used in treating psoriasis, eczema, and infection and inflammation of acne. Neem gum is used as a textile dye and also in few medicinal preparations. It’s the azadirachtin, the bio-compound that makes neem, King of remedies. The same azadirachtin is used in preparation of biodegradable pesticides and these are perfect answer for eco friendly farming. But time will tell how many more useful bio-compounds are still there waiting to see light of the day. Now agree that neem, King of natural remedies name is justified?
