Maintaining Staff – Motivational Techniques
Once employees have been recruited, selected and trained it is crucial that the business provides conditions that encourage the employee to remain with the business. This is the role of the maintenance element of the staffing cycle. By retaining the most productive and efficient employees the business is able to increase its productivity and achieve high levels of staff morale and lower the rate of absenteeism. It is important for the business to offer a range of incentives that encourage employees to remain with the business. A business offers a remuneration package that includes both monetary and non monetary benefits.
Monetary benefits are those that reward employees through money. There are minimum wage and conditions that must be provided through Awards. The normal monetary benefits include wages, salary and superannuation.
Non monetary benefits are those that do not include money however add value to the remuneration package. Examples include: free child care for working moths, mobile phones, company cars, cheap housing, health care and cheap housing loans.
Motivating employees is the most important function to improve the productivity of workers. There is no direct answer to this question as all workers respond differently to rewards. Some theories suggest that rewards motivate workers whereas other theories suggest that the threat of punishment or job dismissal motivates workers to perform better.
Research has suggested that employees are motivated by a range of factors not just monetary rewards. The total remuneration package is important. The following factors are also important motivators:
• Leading by example
• Encourage suggestions
• Implement conflict-resolution strategies
• Delegate responsibility
• Take an interest in employees development
• Provide a safe work environment
• Establish join objectives through negotiations
• Make clear expectations
• Communicate regularly with staff
Studies conducted have shown that pay ranked 5th whereas factors such as variety and challenges, inclusion in decision making and an understanding boss were high on the list of motivating factors in the workplace.
