The following are the different steps which should be followed to start a dropshipping business:
(a) First you have to decide what types of products to sell. You may offer different household products, electronic products, electrical appliances, cell phones and accessories etc. Instead of offering different unrelated products, try to offer products of the same category.
(b) Now you have to decide whether you would like to set up your own e-commerce website. Though it is advised to have your own e-commerce site, you can start with E Bay. You can easily build an online store with E Bay and start offering your products from there.
(c) The next important step is to look for a reliable and legitimate dropshipping company. Before signing up an account with a dropshipping company, you must check it’s background and past performance. You may find the necessary information by searching in Google or Yahoo or by visiting different forums and discussion boards. The company should have a clear refund policy. The contact address should be clearly stated on the website and the website should be updated regularly. There should be a large selection of products to choose from.
(d) After you select a company, you have to register with them and open a reseller account. In most of the cases, this can be done online. But some companies may require you to fill up a form and provide your Tax ID and business license.
(e) Advertise your products. In order to make sales, you must drive traffic to your website or E Bay store. Advertising can be done in various ways. You may use ‘Pay Per Click’ or PPC advertising such as Google Adwords or Yahoo Overture. You may also go for free ways such as free classified advertising and article marketing.
(f) After you make a sale and receive the payment, place the order on the dropshipper to supply the goods. The price which you pay to the dropshipper should be lower than that which you receive from your customer. The difference will be your profit.
(g) After sales follow up is very important. You must follow up with your dropshipper so that they supply the goods on time. Make sure that the customer is satisfied with the goods. Keep good relation with your customers and you may receive repeat orders.
