It does cut off some hair and it tends to make the ends split faster. A warning should be in place not to do this if you have dyed your hair or use a lot of hairspray. The sprays sometimes protect the hair from being fried but only if you spray after everytime you use the straightener. Trust me when I say the worst thing still for you to do for your hair is let a 5 year old brush it. It hurts. :'( Trust me the last one does not work.
