Dangers of Using Laxatives For Weight Loss
Most of the weight loss supplements that are advertised today come in the form of some sort of tea. Everybody has seen the herbal and diet teas at their neighborhood market. Although they claim to be effective, what they don’t tell you is that some of their ingredients can be dangerous to your health.
One of the consequences of drinking teas specifically for dieting is that you will have to use the restroom frequently. This makes people feel as though their body is being cleaned by the tea. While this will eliminate some impurities, the same effect can be had by drinking a large amount of water. Diet teas achieve this effect by including certain ingredients such as aloe or castor oil. These components have been long known to be laxatives and cause the frequent trips to the bathroom, and there is nothing revolutionary about using these ingredients to this end.
Castor oil, aloe, and senna are well known to be laxatives and can be purchased over-the-counter from any drug store or grocery store. Even though this laxative effect feels as though you are being cleaned out, it has been shown that the excretion caused by such substances doesn’t contain enough fat calories to be worth taking.
This is because a laxative doesn’t take effect in the colon where most of the absorption of nutrients takes place. Rather, laxatives take effect in the upper intestines. If you were take use laxatives frequently, you may permanently change the way your body takes in fat. This can cause continual liquid excretion as well as uncontrollable weight loss. People with eating disorders such as anorexia have long been know to abuse these substances to help themselves lose weight.
While abusing over-the-counter laxatives is a surefire way to drop pound, you can also damage your digestive tract for many years to come as well as taking nutrients away from your bones and subsequently weakening them. Diet teas are often cheaper than their laxative counterparts, which may explain why people are more willing to frequently consume these instead of laxatives. Others, such as those with eating disorders, prefer the diet tea so as to keep their stool loose so that they can shed the pounds.
Women seem to be more effected by the ingredients in these teas. It has never been proven that these teas effect a woman’s hormones or her feminine sensitivities, but as with any other method of losing weight quickly, one should always be aware that potential danger may arise. Pregnant women should categorically avoid laxatives as they need all the nutrients available in their bodies. This includes diet teas and other products that contain laxative components. Women need to be strong so that their babies can grow strong and healthy.
Never trust the outrageous claims made on the labels of these diet teas. They are under no requirement from the government to back up their claims because their products are non-medical. For example, they commonly use the term “bowel cleansing solutions” to refer to products that we would otherwise call laxatives instead of using the word itself. Another favorite of the manufacturers is the term “low in calories”. Unless it is sweetened, it probably doesn’t contain any calories, but it also doesn’t mean that its good for your or performs how its advertised.
The consequences of abusing laxatives by over-drinking diet teas usually happen if you are going far above and beyond the recommended dose. You may experience violent stomach illness, uncontrollable diarrhea, blood from your anus, as well as a number of possible other symptoms. It has been proven that abusing certain laxatives can cause irreversible constipation from the loss of small intestine function. Such cases require surgical removal of the small intestine.

I agree that laxatives, including one you didn’t mention, cascara sagrada, can be dangerous. Exercise and good nutrition are the best way to weight loss. Julian
