When it comes to shopping for Christmas, the phrase: “Better late than never” just doesn’t apply anymore.

Every week during the year, department stores have sales. In addition, if you check the Sunday papers every week, odds are you will find some store offering a sale the following week. So why do some people wait until Christmas Eve to buy gifts? Perhaps if they knew how much money they could have saved if they had shopped during the year, they would pause and ponder the concept.

Let’s face it; with the economy in a decline, companies have to mark up their merchandise – especially during the holidays. Since money is very tight for the average consumer, make it easier on yourself and start Christmas shopping earlier in the year – around spring is a good time.

While there are times when an unexpected guest may arrive for Christmas Eve dinner or someone in your office gave you a gift and you feel you have to reciprocate, the beauty of shopping early is that you can buy several of the same items that are on sale and have them on hand for such an occasion.

Gift cards have become the most popular gift over the last several years. They are easily attainable and can be purchased online, at department stores, electronic stores, nail salons, spas, or even at drug stores. In fact, you can purchase these gift cards in July without worry since they usually have a one year expiration date.

With the price of gas soaring, you can even buy a VISA gift card and give it to a friend or family member to purchase gas. The possibilities are endless, and shopping early not only saves time in the long term, but money as well. This is particularly true if you are on a budget.

Another way you can shop for Christmas early is by shopping online. Some of us prefer this method as you can take your time, find sites that offer great deals, use online coupons, and have the items delivered. All you have to do is wrap them at the appropriate time.

Here’s another tip: If you shop on Amazon.com, a great deal is to sign up for their Amazon Prime Program. You pay $79.00 a year and all items purchased over $25.00 are shipped free with two-day shipping as well. They also offer gift cards.

As we all strive to maintain our budgets and save money, isn’t it worth it to start your Christmas shopping early?

There are many ways you can set up a budget for Christmas. The key is to begin early. Since Christmas is only two months away, you will probably need to put your Christmas gift list together now. Here are some tips.

As you begin to make your gift list, budget an amount that you can afford for each person and stick to it. If you think you are going over the amount specified, why not buy a gift card for that amount.

If you have been exchanging gifts with siblings and their children, now is a good time to talk with your brothers and/or sisters and decide that presents will only be given to children this year.

Instead of purchasing new decorations this year, enhance the ones you already have on hand. Get the family involved in making decorations, utilizing items you have in your home.

Wrapping paper and cards can be very expensive. Make Christmas cards online and/or send e-cards to your friends and family members. As for wrapping paper, you can use tissue paper, newspaper, or utilize the Christmas bags you received last year and spruce them up.

Pay for gifts with cash if at all possible. Using your credit card will just put you into debt or, in some cases, more debt than you can handle. If you have to pay with a credit card, try and pay off the balance as soon as possible.

If you love to bake, you can also make your own gifts baskets for Christmas. Visit any dollar store to purchase the baskets. Fill the baskets with muffins and cookies, cakes and teas. This is very affordable to make and will be a most welcomed gift.

Gift cards are also very popular and you can save time and money by purchasing gift cards to nail salons, online shops, department stores, electronic stores, or even supermarkets. You’ll save money on gas by not having to go from store to store, and you can do this from the comfort of your home.

Setting up a Christmas budget can be done as late as October. However, think about starting to save money for next Christmas on December 26. If you put five dollars away each week, by next October you’ll have enough money to buy affordable gifts and put money aside to pay down any debt as well.

Starting a Christmas budget is perhaps the best method to ensure you do not go into heavy debt after the holidays. Are there pros and cons for setting up a Christmas budget? There are definite pros and, as far as cons are concerned, the only one that comes to mind is if you can’t budget to begin with.

Let’s look at the positive aspects of setting up a Christmas budget. There are many ways you can budget. You can sit down and prepare a Christmas budget, or you can find ways to save money that will allow you to buy affordable gifts without worrying about paying off the debt later. Here are some tips:

* If you start the budget early – even on December 26th, you can begin saving enough money to cover gifts and other expenses for the following year.

* Open a Christmas club at your bank or through your employer. Saving just five dollars a week can yield $250.00. $10.00 a week will give you $500.00 at the end of the year.

* Make a Christmas list and assign a dollar amount to each individual. Stick within whatever budget you allotted for the holiday.

* Start Christmas shopping early; August preferably. In this way you can go to department stores on sale days and obtain some great buys.

* There are coupon sites online wherein you can purchase items for up to 25% off. Bookmark them as they will come in handy throughout the year.

* While you can save money on wrapping paper and cards on December 26th (they usually sell for up to 75% off), you may not wish to deal with the crowds. Instead of going to department stores, visit your local card stores and drug stores as they have these sales as well.

* Instead of purchasing new ornaments for the tree, you can enhance the ornaments you have. Why not have a family night wherein everyone can make a new ornament for the tree with items you have on hand?

* Make gift baskets for Christmas. If you love to bake, this can be an ideal gift.

* Buy all gifts with cash. However if you need to use a credit card, pay the balance off as soon as possible.

Starting a Christmas budget is a great idea for anyone who has trouble saving for the holidays. While most people are out shopping for gifts on Christmas Eve, you can be spending time with your family and friends exchanging gifts that are special. Whether they are homemade gifts, gift cards, or sale items you purchased earlier in the year – remember it’s the thought not the price of the gift that matters.

You cannot imagine how much money you can save for the Christmas holidays by starting to plan the day after – every year.

For example, the day after Christmas every store has sales galore! You can purchase cards, ornaments, Christmas stockings, wrapping paper, and other holiday items for up to 75% off. If you begin buying these items every year, you will soon have enough to last several years.

Instead of shopping for gifts in the fall, begin in early spring. Department stores have weekly sales and you can save hundreds of dollars shopping early.

Open a Christmas club in January or February. Putting away five or ten dollars a week can yield a nice check by October.

While it is true most of us get caught up in the everyday events of life, we forget that putting just a little money aside can add up at the end of the year. More importantly, if you are not a saver and shop at the last minute, you are spending more money you don’t have and cannot afford.

With the economy in a downturn, gift giving this year may be trimmed down quite a bit. But then again, Christmas isn’t just about gifts – it’s about family, friends, and spending time with people you love.

To make things a little easier on you and your family, start saving for Christmas now. Put the extra change you accumulate every day in a glass jar. If you have older children, perhaps they would like to take on a part-time job such as walking the neighbor’s dog or working in a supermarket after school.

They are many ways in which you can prepare for the holidays now without breaking the bank. Make it a family affair; get together and decide how all of you can chip in to save enough money for the holidays.

Prepare a gift list and trim it down as well as the ornaments for the tree. Create your own ornaments, make your own holiday cards utilizing the computer, and shop early and online to save time and money as well.

Tweak your household budget to find areas where you can put away some savings for the holidays.

If you plan ahead, you can have a wonderful holiday season that can be affordable and enjoyable as well.

You have made your Christmas list, checked it twice, and now you are prepared to venture out on the most important day of the year – Black Friday. Wait! There is just one word of caution – do not go Money Mad on this sales day!

Who doesn’t love a sale? Who dislikes paying off debts? In this case, the two are not mutually exclusive. Shopping on Black Friday, although you can enjoy savings, can also put you into debt if you are not careful.

Here are some tips to help you stick to your Christmas list and your budget:

* Check the prices either online or in the newspaper before you go.
* Clip out the coupons that offer an all-day discount.
* Stick to the budget you’ve set out and the price you’ve assigned for each gift.
* Bring just enough cash to cover the cost of the gifts.
* Use a debit card, or if you really have to use a credit card, stick to the amount you set out to spend and go no further.
* Arrive early in the morning.
* Bring a friend to not only help you find the items, but also to deter you from buying anything that’s not on the list.
* Check out the store before Black Friday and locate the items you intend to purchase. You may also wish to check if they can be held for you until Friday.
* When you arrive at the store, go directly to the department where your items can be found.
* After you have finished all your shopping, leave immediately. Don’t stop to browse or look for something to buy for you. You and your friend can have a leisurely lunch to relax and de-stress.

Yes, the sale items will be enticing and tempting, but remember that the bill will arrive in the mail the following month and you will have to deal with the consequences if you overspend.

Here’s another thought to ponder. Are these sale items marked up specifically for Black Friday? Consider how much you would pay for a blouse on sale if you shopped in August. Department stores are in the business of making money. In order to do so, they are certainly not going to sell an item for no profit.

If you really want to save money, time, and stress – start your Christmas shopping in the early spring or summer. You can shop on any sale day when the stores are less crowded and you have time to consider the purchase.

In fact, there are millions of people who have boycotted Black Friday altogether. Perhaps they know something we don’t!

While we all enjoy the Christmas holidays, once the bills begin to arrive we are usually brought back down to earth with a bang. If you want to avoid holiday debt, here are some tips.

Open up a Christmas club on January 2nd. You can contribute five or ten dollars a week to the club and by October you will either have $200 or $400 to spend on Christmas gifts.

Avoid using your credit card to buy gifts. This only adds to your ongoing debt and will just leave you stressed out after the holidays. Pay with cash whenever possible. If you have to buy an item with a credit card, pay the bill off as soon as you receive it.

A Christmas budget would be a great idea to decrease the likelihood that you will overspend on gifts. Make a list of the friends and family members you intend to give a gift to and assign a dollar amount. It is important to stick to the budget.

Begin Christmas shopping earlier in the year. There are always sales every week – take advantage of them. You can even buy two or more of the same item in case you have to give a gift you weren’t planning on.

If you like to shop online, use one credit card. There are many online coupon sites that offer great savings throughout the year. Utilize the coupons, check out the sales, and make your purchases. Remember to pay the credit card bill balance as soon as possible.

Perhaps Jane and little Joey want something very expensive this Christmas. If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it. With the list of gifts they will present to you, there is sure to be some items you can afford.

Holiday debt may be avoidable if you start with a Christmas budget, put aside a few dollars every day, or open a Christmas club. Instead of buying a cup of coffee everyday, put that money towards Christmas.

Let’s be honest, buying items with credit card is very easy to do these days, especially with internet shopping. But if you shop early, you can certainly pay off the debt before the holidays and start the New Year with a “bang” instead of a whimper.
