Building Muscles While Losing Weight
No matter how hard we try, as we grow older the amount of muscles in our body deteriorates. Once a person reaches the age of 25, as much as 5% of the total muscle mass they have in their body will be lost every ten years. Building up muscle is crucial if you are looking for ways to lose weight. This is because our muscles use up any calories we take in from the food we eat and the beverages that we consume. It is for this reason that as we grow older, losing weight can become more and more difficult.
This being the case, it is important to strive to rebuild your body’s muscles while losing weight. Not only will this allow you to lose weight more quickly, but also to ensure that you are able to keep the weight off. There are several ways to go about building muscles as you try to lose weight.
Exercise on a Regular Basis
Exercising regularly will not only help you lose weight, but also help build up muscles. By exercising as often as three times a week, you are able to accomplish two things. The first accomplishment is that since you are making your body a lot more active, you are able to heighten your body’s metabolism by quickly converting fats into energy. This boost in physical activity allows you to lose weight faster. The second accomplishment is your muscle development. By exercising, you are using the muscles in your body. As a result, you are replacing the fatty tissues in your body with lean and toned muscles.
Revert to a High-Protein, Low-Carbohydrate Diet
Another way for you to build muscles while losing weight is to go for a high protein, low carbohydrate diet. Protein rich foods contain amino acids and essential nutrients that helps to repair worn out muscles after exercising. These types of foods also help promote the build up of lean muscle tissue in your body, increasing your body’s muscle mass. Lowering your intake of carbohydrates means that your body will be able to burn these foods a lot quicker. When your body needs additional calories, it will start converting your body fat into energy, thus allowing you to lose weight faster.
Do Not Panic
Initially, you may be surprised that instead of losing weight, you may actually be staying in the same weight range. In fact, you may even gain a couple of pounds. This does not mean that your workout and diet regimen is not working. Muscles tend to weigh more than fatty tissues. Over time, you will be able to notice your weight slowly going down. As a means of encouragement, it would be a good idea to measure different parts of your body on a weekly basis. When measuring your body you will see the inches falling off slowly but steadily as your fatty tissues are replaced with firm, lean muscles.
