Acai Berries

Acai berries, the fruits of the acai palm, resemble grapes in shape and color. One inch or 25 mm is the normal size of an acai fruit. These fruits are produced in the branched panicles of the palm. One can find seven hundred to nine hundred fruits in a panicle. Depending on the type of the berry, the berries will turn to dark purple or green in color when they become ripe.

Acai palms produce two crops a year. The size of the single large seed contained in the fruit will be around 7 to 10 mm in diameter. The mesocarp, the fleshy part, of the fruit that contains the pulp, has a uniform thickness of 1 mm or less. The seed or the endocarp of the fruit makes up about eight percent of the fruit.

Acai fruit is an important ingredient in almost all the food prepared by the Amazon people of Brazil. These people consume these fruits in different forms and it is said that it constitutes almost forty percent of the foods that they take a day.

The berries that we get from acai palms have a tendency to deteriorate very fast due to its high fat content. Various companies use Acai berries to prepare juice and health drinks. The companies who produce acai drinks use them in different blends.

Acai fruits are also used to make cattle feed. The large seeds of these fruits are ground to make the food for livestock. It can also be used as manure for plants. It is found that one hundred grams of acai berry extract contains 52.2 grams of carbohydrates, 8.1 gram of protein, 44.2 grams of fiber and 32.5 grams of fat. The other useful properties that are contained in an acai fruit include oleic acid, linoleic acid, and various other anti-oxidants.
